MOOC Checklist

MOOC Checklist

MOOCs, or massive open online courses, are online courses on a specific topic that one can complete, often in their own time, to help improve their knowledge. Many of these courses include a mixture of peer-graded assignments with deadlines, tests and quizzes, and community discussion to help aid learning.

I absolutely love these courses for expanding my knowledge and developing new skills or refining existing ones, which as any software engineer can appreciate, is an important part of the field. I aim not just to improve my technical and programming skills by means of these courses, but often soft skills and expertise in other fields to better myself as a professional. They’re not my only source of learning, as I also enjoy learning from resources such as Laracasts (highly recommended, by the way), from textbooks (check my Goodreads), and obviously from my university.

In the past, I have found it far too cumbersome to try and list all of my MOOCs and online course participation on my LinkedIn profile (I still list them under Certifications for completeness, but they don’t receive sufficient screen time there), and I don’t believe that they are relevant enough to list on a resume / CV. Consequently, I decided that having a dedicated webpage to list my progress and scores in various courses from across the Internet would be a far more practical idea.

NB: In some online courses and specialisations, it is frustratingly mandatory to complete the ‘easier’ or foundation level sections before progressing onto the more difficult or advanced modules if you want any form of recognition or certification upon total completion. Although I suppose you can never get enough revision in HTML, CSS, or JavaScript, given that they are the building blocks of everything on the web after all.
